Japan to go ahead with plans to build its first passenger jets
Kartik Punaskar
Mar. 28, 2008

All Nippon Airways (ANA) said yesterday that it had placed a conditional order with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for up to 25 commercial planes.

Mitsubishi's proposed MRJ, a 80 to 100 seat regional jet can benefit Japan, India and China. Mitsubishi has not officially committed to commercial production, however, ANA's public announcement suggests a decision to go ahead has been made.

Mitsubishi has said that it needs to sell about 350 of the aircraft to meet its costs; some analysts have suggested that the true number is higher.

Bombardier Inc. of Canada, Brazil's Embraer SA and companies in China and Russia developing midsize jets are also tapping the market of smaller regional commercial jets all over the world .
